When it comes to moving house you will find that lists are one of the most helpful tools. Following are some of our suggestions you can use as you get close to moving into “Your New Home”.

Your moving House Checklist

One month to six weeks prior to your possession date

If renting give your landlord notice in writing.
Compile a list of any new important phone numbers.
Is it time to have a Garage Sale? Sort through what you are keeping and what you wish to sell.
Hire a moving company and / or schedule the move
Check your important papers. Are there any you need to keep a side in a safe place eg: Insurances
Pack and label any boxes you can – we all have some stuff which is seldom used
Do you need to request time off work for your move?
Source items you need for moving eg: packing boxes, masking tape

Two weeks prior to your possession date

Confirm your moving date and time with your moving company
Arrange the phone number for your new home (the number may change)
What are you doing with your pets? Board for the day can be less stressful for all. Does your pet have details on its collar in case they do a runner
Arrange cancellation of the newspaper delivery or transfer your subscription
Coordinate disconnection and new connection dates and accounts with gas and electric
Transfer Sky TV connections – if applicable
Arrange cleaning of the old house if required eg: carpet steam cleaning
Complete a mail forwarding address card at the Post Shop

Pick up change of address cards at the Post Shop and start sending them to:

Things to do during the last 3 days before moving

Pack a bag. You may want a change of clothes and items for the other end. Include things like toilet rolls, light bulbs, candles, a few tools, matches, cash, a list of important numbers and jewellery or Valuables
Laundry – Do any last minute laundry and disconnect the washing machine
Confirm keys are going to be available for the new home and that all is on track
Fridges/Freezers – empty out and clean out as much as possible
Kitchen Cupboards – go through your cupboards and throw out anything out of date, check to make sure all the packets, bottles and jars are sealed tightly to avoid spillage
Valuables and documents – pack and put them in a safe place
Dismantle & Disconnect any items such as TVs, stereo’s, Home theatre units (consider labling leads)
Draw a map to ensure everyone know where they are heading
Mobile Phone – make sure it is fully charged
Toilet Bag – place items you really want to find easily in a toilet bag
Arrange a refreshment box. Include food and refreshments you want for the day you move. Don’t forget the tea, coffee jug etc
Outside items – Is there is anything you can move into garage to keep it dry such as outdoor furniture
Create a Priority Box. This box will end up containing all the small illusive items such as bed legs, remote controls, allan keys, a couple of the key tools, extension leads, double adaptors

Yeah! It’s moving day today

Put the Priority Box in a key place to ensure all the small items go in it. It should be the last thing to go with you in the car
Confirm your mover’s arrival time
Finish packing the toiletries box or bag
Strip all the beds, keeping the linen with each bed
Drop the children off or organise a corner in the lounge for them with toys and treats
Confirm your mover’s arrival time
Have all the important keys and documents out and ready
Take the pets to their day care or boarder for the move
Double check cupboards, wardrobes, attics, garden sheds and the garage
Lock all the windows and doors, and turn off all lights
Turn in keys to the landlord or the solicitor for handover
Leave the old home once the movers have finished and are on the way to the new home
Meet movers promptly at your new home – most will charge by the hour
Check the van to ensure it really is empty
Check to see the power, phone and gas are working
Supervise placement of the boxes and furniture
Make the beds. You will really now enjoy a good night’s sleep
